A SOBERED COMMUNIST

BY CALLUM ROYLE
20th April – 3rd May
Opening Night:

Thursday 20th April, 6pm-8pm
Inspired by the book, ‘The Hero’s Children: the Post-War Generation in Eastern Europe’ by Paul Neuberg, A Sobered Communist explores the psychological scars of enforced Systematisation and heavy surveillance in Romania. In an interview with a young Romanian woman, Neuberg recounts her memory of the constant monitoring by the Secret Police of her and her family. Citizens were offered incentives for reporting antigovernment speech and behaviour. It became clear, for the purpose of self preservation, that these acts of individualism were to be kept private. With the approach of the 30 year anniversary since the fall of communism, it is fair to suggest, the systems flawed nature still remains to have psychological effects on its proletariat.
