Who is Junior Space?
Junior Space is a gallery and art retail space located on Smith Street in Fitzroy. The gallery provides an accessible platform for the exhibition and sale of artworks by emerging artists. Junior Space holds a non-traditional vision of a gallery with an emphasis on project and exhibition concepts designed to push the definition of a traditional gallery space.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for innovative and dynamic contemporary works to fill the first half of our 2017 exhibition calendar. To be considered, applicants will need to provide previously un-exhibited bodies of work or group show and curator proposals. Junior Space welcomes a variety of mediums including ceramics, photography, painting and installations. We also have the capability to host book launches and screenings.
Our exhibitions are designed to engage audiences both aesthetically and conceptually. We also welcome playful exhibition definitions that encourage engagement with the work.
Who should apply:
Emerging and established artists are welcome to apply, but naturally we do not exhibit or stock represented artists.
Junior Space has a commitment to accessibility and we support practitioners of any background, age, gender, culture and ability.
What you need to apply:
Please provide a summary of your vision of the exhibition and examples of your work. We don’t require academic proposals, but so need to be able to gauge an understanding of your artistic practice and your work.
If work is completed, please send through examples of works to be exhibited or if not completed images that convey the concept.
A written application that addresses the below
o Please explain the nature of your practice.
o Have you exhibited before. If yes, please provide details.
o What is the exhibition about thematically?
o Please supply visual examples of the work to support the concept.
o How does the exhibition concept relate to your ongoing practice?
The current cost of exhibiting is $385 a week for a minimum of two weeks.
This fee includes:
• Rent of the 40m2 gallery space
• Street frontage to 65 Smith Street, Fitzroy
• Design and distribution of an electronic invitation
• Email to our mailing list of art industry professionals and the public
• Advertising and marketing of exhibition on our social networks
• Staff for opening night
• Staff for invigilation of the exhibition (Tuesday-Sunday)
• Liquor Licensing and bar overheads
• Curatorial and professional advice
• Exhibition listed on the Junior Space web site
• Insurance of work whilst on display at Junior Space
• Contacts to framing services and installers
• Opportunity to sell additional works in the Junior Space Store on consignment for 40% commission.
Exhibitions will be open to the public for visitation from Tuesday to Sunday. Openings are the first Thursday night of the exhibition period from 6-8pm, unless otherwise negotiated.
Junior Space does not receive any profit from the exhibition, nor does it take any commission on any sale of the works in the exhibition space. The exhibition fee covers rent of the space and the above services.
The show will open on the Thursday, with Thursday allocated to install. The show will end on a Tuesday, with Wednesday allocated to de-install.
Installation can take place on the Thursday before the opening of the exhibition. Junior Space has adjustable lighting in place, and a hanging system with 20 cables. All additional equipment or install costs are to be paid for/supplied by the artist. Additional install time can be negotiated with Junior Space.
De-installation is also the responsibility of the artist. The Wednesday after the last Tuesday of the show is the time allocated for de-install. If additional time or storage of works is needed, this will need to be negotiated this with us.
If assistance is needed with install or de-install, we can recommend industry professionals that can help with this process. This cost is not covered in the exhibition fee.
A nonrefundable deposit of 25% and a bond of $150 will be required upon confirmation of exhibition booking. If you are experiencing financial difficulty, please contact Junior Space as soon as possible to arrange a payment plan. The remaining balance must be paid one month prior to exhibition installation. Bond will be returned after de-installation where the gallery must be returned to its original condition.
